Intro to Architecture
2020SCHOOL
Smith CollegeCollaborators
Professor Chris Aiken and dance studentsThe work on this page shows a selection of the end-of-term portfolios of students from the Fall 2021 Intro to Architecture studio. Students began with an image of nature from Smith’s campus which they then analyzed through sketching and drafting. After deriving a 2D geometry, students transitioned to developing a 3D geometry. Students learned to push their thinking beyond extrusions to make form. Students then worked with dancers in Professor Chris Aiken’s improv dance class to create body architecture based on this geometry to help the dancer rethink an overused body part. In the last few weeks, students moved to the architectural scale, using an element of their geometry to create a dance pavilion for two dancers. Students conducted precedent studies and learned about plan, section, and elevation, and the relationship between these three drawings.
